In this verse, the author of Hebrews reminds us that God’s knowledge is absolute and complete. Nothing—no thought, no action, no secret—is hidden from His sight. This is both a sobering and comforting truth. Sobering because it reveals that we cannot escape God’s gaze; there is no place where we can hide our sins or our brokenness. But comforting because it means that God knows us fully, intimately, and still loves us in spite of ourselves.

I have this “Mom” plaque with an ugly candle holder that matches nothing in my house that my youngest gave me for Christmas several years ago. He bought them at the school Santa Shop, along with a silver necklace that spells out the word “Mom”. He was so proud of his purchases...and they were so very thoughtful. He took the time to actually pick out gifts for each one of us and I was surprised at how much thought he put into each one, as he explained them to us Christmas morning.

As I was standing in line yesterday between a lineman who had been working for over 40 hours straight and came to stand in line to try to get a generator for his family and a man in a wheelchair who was hit by a distracted driver ten years ago that left him paralyzed, I couldn’t help but be reminded of this week’s verse: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

This Psalm of David was one of confidence…confidence in the Lord. He says in this week’s verse that even if his mother and father forsake him, the Lord will take him up. As I was reading this psalm, I couldn’t help but think about babies and children abandoned by their parents.
